## Yinka Ogunbiyi: The Nigerian Innovator Behind HaloBraid, the Hair-Braiding Robot

**![images (8)](https://afroform.com/hs-fs/hubfs/images%20(8).jpg?width=738&height=414&name=images%20(8).jpg)**For many women, getting box braids or knotless braids is an experience that requires patience. Depending on the style, size and length, a single appointment can take several hours.

But the time commitment does not affect clients alone. Professional hairstylists also spend long hours performing repetitive hand movements, which can contribute to physical strain and discomfort.

Nigerian-American entrepreneur Yinka Ogunbiyi saw an opportunity to address this problem through technology.

Her solution? HaloBraid, a robotic hair-braiding assistant designed to work alongside professional hairstylists.

## The Four-Day Hair Experience That Started It All

The idea behind HaloBraid came from a personal experience.

During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Yinka attempted to install knotless braids in her own hair because she could not visit a salon.

What she expected to be a manageable task turned into a four-day experience.

That experience made her question why there wasn't a technological solution to make the braiding process faster and easier.

As someone with a background in biomechanical engineering, she began thinking about how engineering could solve a problem she understood personally.

Rather than accepting the time and physical effort associated with traditional braiding, she decided to explore a different possibility.

## From an Idea to HaloBraid

Yinka teamed up with co-founder David Afolabi to develop the technology.

The journey was not an overnight success. The team reportedly built more than 600 prototypes while working to develop a device that could reproduce the repetitive movements involved in individual braiding.

They also engaged hairstylists and people who regularly wear braids to better understand the challenges of the industry.

The result was HaloBraid, a device designed to assist with individual braiding styles, including box braids and knotless braids.

The technology combines human hairstyling skills with automated movement, allowing the stylist to retain control over the final hairstyle.

## How Does HaloBraid Work?

One important thing to understand is that HaloBraid is not designed to replace the hairstylist.

Instead, it works as a braiding assistant.

Here's how the process works:

**1. The stylist starts the braid.**

The hairstylist sections the client's hair, determines the size and pattern, and begins the braid manually.

**2. HaloBraid takes over.**

The stylist feeds the started braid into the device, which handles the repetitive weaving process along the length of the hair.

**3. The stylist completes the look.**

Once the device finishes, the stylist takes over again to seal the ends and complete the hairstyle.

According to the company, HaloBraid can finish individual braids up to five times faster than manual braiding.

It is designed to support different braid sizes, from micro braids to larger styles, while working with different hair textures.

The technology is currently designed for individual braids rather than scalp-braided styles such as cornrows.

## Why This Innovation Matters to the Hair Industry

HaloBraid is interesting because it addresses two sides of the same problem: the time clients spend getting their hair done and the physical effort hairstylists put into their work.

For clients, faster braiding could mean shorter salon appointments and more flexibility.

For hairstylists, the technology could help reduce repetitive manual work and create opportunities to serve more customers without simply extending working hours.

It could also introduce a new way for salons to think about productivity and business growth.

Importantly, the technology does not remove the creative role of the hairstylist. The professional still determines the braid pattern, sections the hair and controls the overall look.

## A $7 Million Investment in the Future of Hair Technology

HaloBraid's vision has attracted significant investor interest.

In 2026, the company secured $7 million in seed funding in a round led by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

The funding is intended to support product development and the company's commercial rollout.

The company has also reported significant interest from professional salons, with thousands of salons joining its waiting list.

This investment is an important milestone because it demonstrates growing interest in technology designed specifically for textured hair and the professional beauty industry.

## Who Is Yinka Ogunbiyi?

Beyond being the founder of HaloBraid, Yinka is a biomechanical engineer and entrepreneur with an academic background from Harvard University.

Her experience combines engineering, product development and business.

Before HaloBraid, she co-founded Desora, a consumer hardware company focused on smart cooking technology.

Her journey demonstrates how skills developed in one industry can be applied to solve problems in another.

What makes her story particularly interesting is that the idea behind HaloBraid did not come from an abstract business opportunity. It came from an everyday experience that millions of people who wear braids can relate to.

She recognised a problem, explored its possibilities and brought together engineering and entrepreneurship to develop a solution.

## What African Entrepreneurs Can Learn From Yinka Ogunbiyi

There are several lessons aspiring entrepreneurs can take from Yinka's journey.

**1. Personal problems can inspire business ideas.**

HaloBraid began with an experience many people can relate to. Sometimes, the problems we encounter in everyday life can reveal opportunities worth exploring.

**2. Technology can improve traditional industries.**

The beauty industry has existed for generations, but that does not mean its processes cannot evolve. Innovation can make established services more efficient without taking away their human element.

**3. Build with the people who understand the problem.**

By engaging hairstylists and braiding customers, the HaloBraid team could better understand what the industry actually needed.

**4. Don't be afraid to experiment.**

The reported development of more than 600 prototypes demonstrates the amount of experimentation involved in turning an idea into a working product.

**5. Think beyond the obvious market.**

HaloBraid is not simply about making hair faster. It has the potential to influence salon operations, hairstylist productivity and the wider textured-hair technology market.

## The Bigger Picture: African Innovation Has No Limits

Yinka Ogunbiyi's story is a reminder that innovation does not have to come from industries traditionally associated with technology.

Sometimes, the next exciting technological development can come from something as familiar as getting your hair braided.

HaloBraid brings together engineering, beauty and entrepreneurship to address a problem that affects clients and professional hairstylists.

Whether it is helping stylists save time, reducing repetitive physical work or creating new possibilities for salon businesses, the technology offers an interesting glimpse into the future of hairstyling.

And perhaps the biggest lesson is this: you do not always have to invent something completely unfamiliar to make a difference. Sometimes, you simply need to find a better way to do something people have been doing for generations.
