## Seyi Vodi: How a Failed Banking Test Helped Shape a Nigerian Fashion Empire

![images (6)](https://afroform.com/hs-fs/hubfs/images%20(6).jpg?width=678&height=452&name=images%20(6).jpg)

A failed job test is not usually the beginning of a business success story. For Nigerian fashion entrepreneur Seyi Adekunle, popularly known as Seyi Vodi, however, his journey took a different turn after he discovered that tailoring could offer him more than a side income.

With a degree in Geology from the University of Maiduguri, Vodi did not follow the conventional route into fashion. He learnt tailoring during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, started making clothes for fellow corps members and gradually developed a business that would become the foundation of Vodi Group.

His story is a reminder that entrepreneurship does not always begin with a grand plan. Sometimes, it starts with a skill, a few customers and the willingness to keep moving when the original plan falls apart.

## From Geology to Tailoring

Vodi's interest in fashion developed during his NYSC year in Akwa Ibom State. While serving, he befriended local tailors and began learning how to make clothes.

His first customers were people around him. He made shirts and boxer shorts for fellow corps members, using the opportunity to improve his skills while earning money.

At the time, tailoring was a practical way to make extra income. But it also introduced him to the fundamentals of running a business: understanding what customers wanted, delivering a product and building relationships that could bring repeat orders.

Those early sales became the starting point for something much bigger.

## The Banking Job That Didn't Go to Plan

After completing NYSC, Vodi moved to Abuja to explore employment opportunities. Like many graduates, he considered a job in the banking sector.

In 2002, he failed a recruitment test for a banking position. But fashion was already providing him with an alternative path, and he continued selling clothes while pursuing other opportunities.

He eventually secured a banking job in 2003, but later left to focus on his fashion business full-time.

The experience is an important part of his story, but it is not simply a tale of failure leading directly to success. Vodi was already developing a business, learning from customers and building the experience that would help him make entrepreneurship a serious career choice.

## Building a Brand, One Customer at a Time

Vodi registered his business as Testimony Fabrics in 2001 before adopting the Vodi name in 2003.

His early approach was straightforward: source fabrics, make clothes and find customers willing to pay for his work. Instead of waiting until he had a large shop or extensive resources, he concentrated on building demand and delivering garments that met customers' expectations.

One notable moment came when he approached banking professionals in Abuja to sell his shirts. In an account published by BellaNaija in 2017, Vodi recalled approaching staff at Standard Trust Bank. That effort eventually connected him with Tony Elumelu, who became one of his customers.

The encounter helped reinforce his ambition to build a larger fashion business.

It also illustrates a practical lesson for entrepreneurs: customers can come from places you might not initially consider, and direct outreach can open doors that advertising alone may not.

## Growing Beyond Tailoring

Over time, Vodi became known for bespoke menswear and for dressing prominent people in business, entertainment and public life.

His business expanded beyond individual clothing commissions, with the wider Vodi Group associated with ventures in textiles, fashion training and other services.

In July 2025, media reports marked Vodi's 50th birthday and the unveiling of a new headquarters in Abuja. It was another milestone in the development of a business that began with a skill he learnt during his service year.

Fashion can create opportunities far beyond the finished garment. The industry supports fabric sourcing, manufacturing, retail, design, training and employment. For entrepreneurs who can develop a strong reputation and a reliable customer base, it can also provide a platform for expansion into related businesses.

Vodi's journey shows how a small operation can become the starting point for a broader enterprise, although growth requires more than ambition. It also depends on customer trust, consistent delivery and the ability to manage a business as it becomes more complex.

## Five Lessons African Entrepreneurs Can Learn From Seyi Vodi

**1. Start with the skill you have.** Vodi began by making simple clothes for people around him. Entrepreneurs do not always need to wait for substantial capital before testing an idea.

**2. Find your first customers.** His early sales and efforts to approach banking professionals helped him build relationships and introduce his work to new audiences.

**3. Don't let one setback define your future.** Failing a recruitment test was disappointing, but it was not the end of his career options. He continued developing a business while e
