For Rodgers Mwijukye and Ronald Asiimwe, entrepreneurship grew out of a friendship that began in a Ugandan high school classroom.
The two met in 2015 and remained close through high school and university, even though they pursued very different fields. Mwijukye studied water and irrigation engineering, while Asiimwe studied computer science.
Their career paths looked different, but agriculture eventually brought them to the same problem: how can African farmers produce food reliably when their livelihoods depend heavily on unpredictable rainfall?
That question led to the creation of Drought Guard Africa in 2023.
The Ugandan company designs and installs climate-smart irrigation, clean water, and solar energy systems for rural farmers, refugee settlements, and underserved communities.
Mwijukye initially imagined a career in academia or public service. With a background in water and irrigation engineering, he considered pursuing postgraduate studies and eventually a PhD.
Asiimwe, meanwhile, was firmly on the technology side. He enjoyed coding and working behind a computer, but agriculture had already featured heavily in many of the projects he worked on at university.
Their friendship made the transition into business easier.
Having known each other for years, they already understood each other's personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. For them, Drought Guard Africa was not the foundation of their relationship; it became an extension of a friendship that had existed for years.
That familiarity has also helped them divide responsibilities.
Mwijukye focuses heavily on identifying funding opportunities, grants, investors, and partnerships, while Asiimwe brings his technical and software expertise to the business.
Their differences have occasionally created tension, particularly around decision-making. But over time, those differences have become an advantage.
Developing an irrigation system was only part of the challenge.
Convincing farmers to adopt it was another matter entirely.
Many farmers had relied on rain-fed agriculture for generations. Telling them that an irrigation system could transform their farms was not enough to earn their trust.
The founders learned that farmers wanted to see evidence.
Demonstration farms became important because farmers could see the technology operating in a real environment and observe its impact for themselves. Local government officials and agricultural extension officers could also help introduce the technology to communities.
The lesson was simple: people are more likely to trust a solution when they can see it working for someone they know.
This became one of the most important lessons in Drought Guard Africa's journey.
Like many early-stage businesses, Drought Guard Africa faced periods when demand existed but the money required to meet that demand did not.
Around the beginning of 2024, the company was receiving significant interest from farmers who wanted irrigation systems. However, existing revenue was not enough to finance the necessary supplies.
The founders explored bank financing but struggled to access it because they lacked the assets and documentation required.
The situation forced them to question whether the business could survive.
Support from Mwijukye's elder brother eventually helped bridge the financial gap through a loan, while subsequent grant funding provided additional support.
For Asiimwe, the hardest period came even earlier, during the company's first year.
With limited capital and ambitious plans, he questioned whether they were building something viable or simply spending another year chasing an idea.
Those experiences taught the founders that a promising solution on paper is very different from one that communities are willing and able to adopt.
One of the founders' strongest observations is that Africa's biggest challenge may not be a lack of technology.
It may be a lack of execution.
Across the continent, countries are discussing artificial intelligence, robotics, and other emerging technologies. At the same time, communities in places such as Uganda's Karamoja region continue to face severe food insecurity.
For the founders, that contrast raises an important question: if Africa has land, people, knowledge, and increasingly advanced technology, why does hunger remain such a persistent problem?
Their answer is that technology must be accompanied by action.
Technology can make farming more efficient, but it cannot independently solve problems that require investment, infrastructure, training, access to markets, and community participation.
Drought Guard Africa's approach reflects this belief. Rather than simply introducing technology, the company focuses on implementing systems that farmers can actually use.
If given $100 million to solve a problem outside their own company, both founders would still choose something closely connected to agriculture and food security.
For Mwijukye, Karamoja represents the kind of challenge he would want to tackle.
Instead of continually supplying food to communities facing hunger, he believes more emphasis should be placed on helping people produce food themselves.
That means putting communities at the centre of the solution and giving them the systems, knowledge, and resources required to become more self-sufficient.
Asiimwe would also remain close to the same ecosystem because of the experience they have already gained.
Starting a completely new business, he notes, would mean rebuilding relationships, knowledge, processes, and market understanding from scratch. Their experience in agriculture has given them a clearer understanding of where the opportunities and challenges lie.
Not every business decision has worked out.
One decision both founders would reconsider is hiring friends.
They found that personal relationships can make difficult business decisions much harder. When an employee is also a friend, addressing poor performance or misconduct can become complicated.
The experience taught them an important lesson: friendship and business relationships may overlap, but they should not replace professional standards and accountability.
They also learned to be cautious about employee loyalty and the amount of responsibility given to individuals within a company.
The founders also experienced pressure to make their business appear further ahead than it really was.
In the early days, there were moments when people around the company exaggerated achievements and spoke confidently about things that had not yet happened.
But the founders eventually rejected that approach.
For Asiimwe, exaggerating progress can become dangerous because founders can begin believing their own claims. Talking about achievements that have not happened may create the illusion of progress while reducing the urgency to do the actual work.
For an early-stage company, honesty about where the business stands can be more valuable than appearing successful.
Ultimately, Drought Guard Africa's vision extends beyond irrigation systems.
The founders want to contribute to a future where drought, climate change, and poor agricultural infrastructure no longer determine whether communities have enough food.
Mwijukye hopes that future generations will find today's struggles difficult to imagine.
He envisions a time when children will hear stories about farmers who depended entirely on rainfall and wonder how people managed to survive under those conditions.
For Asiimwe, the goal is even broader: food security.
He wants future generations to look back and understand that people once faced hunger despite living on a continent with vast agricultural potential—and that entrepreneurs, communities, and institutions worked to change that reality.
Their journey illustrates an important truth about African innovation: having a solution is only the beginning. The real work lies in making that solution accessible, trusted, sustainable, and useful to the people who need it most.
